Marc Austin: Forced to retire at 26 with heart condition
Marc Austin was on track to become one of the World's best triathletes. Even as a youngster, the Scottish athlete's potential shone through. He won silver at both Junior and U23 World Championship level. But it was his surprise bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, ahead of the Brownlee brothers, that really made people take note.
But in June 2020, the 26-year-old's triathlon dreams came to a halt. He was forced to retire on medical grounds after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition ARVC (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy.)
In this interview you'll hear
- Him talk about the palpitations he felt when he knew something wasn't right and his eventual diagnosis
- Why he's grateful to footballer Fabrice Muamba and England cricketer James Taylor for talking about their experiences
- About the doubts and uncertainties that creep into your mind when you're forced to retire
- AND....Why he wore Beth Potter's tracksuit for the medal ceremony at Gold Coast 2018
